Automatic Closed Loop Air to Coal Distribution Control

Foster Wheeler has developed and installed a number of industry first systems (TLN, Vortex Series, ECT, CADM, RADM) for controlling CO emissions under ultra low NOx operating conditions. Most are equipped with closed-loop control of secondary air to coal flow for maximum benefit over the units operating range.

ECT systems calculate the mass flow of coal in each conduit while CADM/RADM systems calculate the mass flow of air at each burner. This data is used together to establish the air bias needed to achieve balanced stoichiometric conditions at each burner. The bias at each burner is used by the plant's DCS system to automatically change damper settings for the correct air distribution to be obtained.

Automatic and continuous control of air flow distribution to match coal flow distribution is an industry first application of this fuel injection type approach developed by Foster Wheeler. The following schematic illustrates a typical ECT, CADM, and DCS information exchange process.
